CP CHAPTER 1- THE SCIENCE OF BIOLOGY

I.   Science: A way of investigating the world in order to form general rules about what causes things to happen

Biology: The study of living things

Biological knowledge is used to:

II.   The Scientific Method - A series of steps used to solve scientific problems          (Malaria example)

    1. Variable: The factor being tested
    2. Control: The experiment with the variable left out; used as a comparison to the variable.
    1. Quantitative: Numbers (measurements, amounts)
    2. Qualitative: Distinguishing characteristics (color/ shape/ texture)

III.   Measurements in Biology - The metric system is used universally for              scientific measurements.

The Metric System

International System of Units - "SI UNITS" - A measuring system based on the number 10.

SI UNITS:

Liter (Volume)

Length (meter) - How long something is (ruler)

Volume (liter, cm3) - Amount of space a substance occupies (1mL = 1 cm3)

Weight (gram) - Measure of the force of gravity on an object (changes with atmosphere: ex. You weigh less on the moon than on earth)

Mass (gram) - How much matter is inside something (does not change with atmosphere) Measure weight & mass with a balance

Temperature (celsius) - Measure of the amount of heat in something.

To convert between Fahrenheit & Celsius, use the formula:

F = 1.8 (C) + 32

Example:

_______ - _______ - _______ - 5,000 m - _______ - ________- _______

_______ - ________- ________ - 0.8 g - ________ - ________ - ________
